I learnt music first from my family and the Totnes session scene, later whilst studying from a range of musicians including Chris Newman, Desi Wilkinson, John Carty and Arty McGlynn, and the many fine players too numerous to mention who I had the pleasure of sitting with in sessions from Durham to Tyneside, the Scottish Borders and Edinburgh. I've always learnt and now I teach by ear, with a focus on the repertoire as a living tradition. I can of course provide notation as an aid to memory if needed. Totnes-based Griselda Sanderson is an experienced teacher of traditional music with a focus on learning and playing folk music by ear. With the aid of notation and recordings she has a dynamic approach to teaching that is designed to get people playing and enjoying the social side of music-making as soon as possible. Her main instrument is fiddle, and she has a wide knowledge of Scottish, Irish and Scandinavian repertoire as well as English and other European styles. She has also helped musicians who want to play in a more 'folky' style on concertina, wind and other stringed instruments and is one of the UK's rare teachers of the Swedish nyckelharpa and Norwegian Hardanger.
