Full English

Full English are a new trio, but their musicians have been around the folk dance scene for a long time. With their years of experience playing for dancing they bring new life to a wide selection of new and traditional tunes. Thoughtful and interesting arrangements will interest the listener as well as the dancer, so the band is ideal for any sort of event, from full-on English ceilidh to weddings, school PTA’s, parties, fund raisers etc.

Lisa Sture plays the fiddle; Lisa was born in Bristol, went to college in Devon and moved to London in the early 80’s. She started playing for Dartington Morris, and regularly went to play with local traditional players like “Pop” Hingston, Les and Jack Rice and Bob Cann. She was a founder member of London-based ceildh band Stömp and had previously been in the legendary Melons for Ecstasy. Since moving back to Devon, Lisa has played in The Oggle Band and Marisco, and currently plays in Babelfish. She has played at many festivals, such as Chippenham, Bideford and Fylde, and reckons the Late Night Extra at Sidmouth is a töp büzz!

David (or Dave or Butty) Robinson plays button accordion and melodeon; he started morris dancing with Bath City in 1968, and started playing the melodeon for morris in 1971 after moving to London and joining Hammersmith Morris (The Smiffs). Founder member of North Circular Accidental Band along with Doug Sheriff, Woody,Tony Penneck and Ray Tomey. North Circ was one of the top ceilidh bands in London in the 70’s. In 1975 Butty moved to Cheshire and started several morris teams and ceilidh bands and began research into English folk dance, which he still does. Moved to Stockport in 1986, formed Madcap, playing English, Scottish, French and Renaissance music on melodeon, anglo concertina and tin whistle. Moved to Devon in 1989, joined Great Western Morris, Flaming Morris and Off The Rails band. Later joined West Somerset Morris and formed Earl Graze Frolics band and published four books for folk musicians. Played for Minehead Town Hobby Horse annually, danced in the Hardy film “Return of the Native” starring Catherine Zeta Jones. In 1996 moved to Somerset and joined Wessex Morris. Now lives in Hambridge and Bristol and continues to research 18th and 19th century music.

Tony Penneck plays bass and occassional cello-mandolin; he also plays bass in The Committee Band and Wossname, used to be a “Smiff” and was also in North Circ with Butty. He later joined Ray Tomey’s ceilidh band Lud’s Lot. He was also a Vorton and has played at all sorts of venues from big festivals like Cambridge and Sidmouth to little tents in back gardens to castles in Germany.

They call themselves “Full English” because most of their tunes are English, and the ones that aren’t wish they were. It’s got nothing to do with breakfast. Really!
