SONG - Shammick Acoustic Sessions> Shammick Abroad Special Concert The Artisans - The George Hotel, Broad Street, South Molton

An impressive new band from London, which brings together musicians from such diverse backgrounds as folk, world, early and mediaeval music, creating fresh and exciting interpretations.

Some of you may have come across The Askew Sisters, traditional folk musicians par excellence, who were booked at Shammick Acoustic a while ago, and charmed everyone.  Since then, as well as continuing with their duo work in the folk scene, they have both been studying for their music degrees, and worked with harmony trio Craig, Morgan and Robson on a CD and show on songs collected from five Hampshire women.  Hazel won this year’s Spiral award for Best Female Singer and is also working with a new vocal trio, Lady Maisery, whilst Emily has been working with no less than three different early music groups at prestigious venues in the South East of England, one of which includes Hazel as well.

With two other musicians, they are The Artisans (not to be confused with the a capella trio, Artisan), an impressive new mediaeval band from London, bringing together musicians from such diverse backgrounds as folk, world and early music, creating fresh and exciting interpretations of period music.  Their ‘Mediaeval Experience’ takes you on a musical journey through ancient Europe, from foot-tapping Italian dances and enchanting French troubadour songs to uplifting Iberian choruses and English carols, demonstrating the rich variety of surviving music from hundreds of years ago.

Performing on a range of fascinating and unusual instruments from recorders and harp to rebec and oud, they perform with energy and enthusiasm. The artistic director of Brighton Early Music Festival said, “The Artisans dust off mediaeval music, bringing it to vibrant life and connecting with audiences through their sheer inventiveness and infectious enjoyment of the music.”  And if they’re good enough for Shakespeare’s Globe and Glyndebourne Opera, they should do for North Devon!

Tickets are £6 if paid in advance, and can be obtained direct from us at the address below, or from the venue, or online through website>.  They will also be available at £7 at the door, or can be reserved through us on 01271 882366 or The George on 01769 572514.

The concert starts at 8 p.m., and meals can be booked before the evening starts – again, ring The George for details.

A fearless and innovative artist whose beguiling left-of-centre songs straddle the divide between mainstream roots and acoustic indie-pop. Tom and Barbara Brown - "An Exmoor Garland" - the Victoria Rooms, Fore Street, Milverton TA4 1JU, 8 p.m. - admission £4 to non-members of The Milverton and Fitzhead Society. You can book in advance by ringing Frances Vail on 01823 400351, or you can pay at the door.

Partly in North Devon, and partly in West Somerset, Exmoor was once a Royal Forest, and still supports a herd of wild red deer. From histories like the Lynmouth flood disaster, hauling a lifeboat across the moor, and Pixie hunting, come a wealth of tales - valorous, humorous, beautiful and silly - which are drawn together in this garland of songs and stories. Hear what happened when Christ’s spaceship landed on Holdstone Down in 1955; about a tradition of wrecking and contraband that continued into the 1990s; about the Miraculous Ram, the charter and pony fairs and all that make this National Park special!

Tom and Barbara have written and performed shows commissioned by a number of festivals and arts centres over the years, and all over the country. In An Exmoor Garland we return to our own roots and some of our favourite themes. Both of us sing and tell tales, and Tom also accompanies some material on guitar, concertina, mandola or melodeon.

“Money well spent, and thank you both so much for such a delightful evening. Everyone I know thoroughly enjoyed the evening and your stories were most entertaining. Most of us accompanied you on singing the choruses to the songs. I hope it won’t be too long before we are able to hear you again.” Pat Bawden, Secretary, The Exmoor Society, Dulverton

SONG - Open night Shammick Acoustic Sessions> with Jon Harvison as featured performer.   Jon rarely performs in the South West, so this is a real treat for us.  With a rich, powerful voice, a tasty guitar technique, an excellent songwriter, and a fine interpreter of traditional songs, he’s not nearly well enough known!

Jon will only be taking up a fairly short time during the evening – most of the entertainment comes from whoever else turns up, and might include songs, music, stories, poems, jokes, step-dance – anything and everything really!  But performance is by no means compulsory, and you’ll be just as welcome if you just want to listen.

There’s no admission charge, although we do pass the pot round for contributions to the expenses of visiting artists like Jon, to subsidise our occasional skills workshops and to help with other expenses.

SONG - Shammick Acoustic Sessions> - Carrivick Sisters.

The Carrivick Sisters need little introduction in North Devon, but for those who haven’t caught up with them yet, Laura and Charlotte are the tremendously talented young twins from South Devon who are taking the folk and the bluegrass scenes by storm!

Between them, they play guitar, mandolin, banjo, dobro and fiddle, and although usually classed as bluegrass, their music has a strong folk influence which is evident in their original songs, many of which will strike a chord with Devon audiences as they are inspired by the local landscape and stories, so much so that their music has been dubbed ‘greengrass’!

Still only just in their 20s, they are experienced performers who have played all over the UK, in Europe and Canada, and have released four CDs. They have won awards both here and in America, last year becoming finalists in the BBC’s Young Folk Awards, and have played at Glastonbury Festival, Llangollen Eisteddfod and the London Guitar Festival, amongst many other prestigious events. They were booked at no less than 26 UK festivals in 2010!

Ralph McTell is one of their fans, saying, “I was very impressed… The girls sing and play as one, and their work is characterised by great musicality.” Pete Coe also waxed lyrical about them after seeing them recently. If you haven’t heard them yet, make sure you do – and if you have, you won’t need any persuading!

£7.00 (£6.00 paid in advance) ~ and members of Shammick Acoustic get a further reduction, priced at £6.00 (£5.00 paid in advance).

Advance tickets can be bought up to a month before the event at Shammick Acoustic Sessions, at The Pack O’ Cards OR at Pet's Pantry in High Street. Advance tickets for non-members, can also be purchased over the net, by credit card, at website>
