| SONG - Open night Shammick Acoustic Sessions> with Martin Curtis A taste of the slightly exotic will be part of Shammick Acoustic’s next Open Night, when Martin Curtis will be our visiting performer. Originally from England, Martin has been resident in New Zealand for the past forty years, and the mountain area in which he lives has inspired many of his self-penned songs. These, together with comic bush poems and old songs, create a fascinating repertoire which finds the very essence of New Zealand. He’s at present on tour in England, and we’re delighted that he’s found time to join us next Saturday, 13th June. The evening starts at 8 p.m., and we welcome everyone who feels like contributing songs, stories, music or poetry or anything else for that matter, as long as it’s acoustic. Those who just want to listen are just as welcome the performers need someone to listen to them! So everyone gets a warm and friendly reception. We do take a collection which goes towards occasional visiting performers’ expenses and to subsidising our occasional workshops (see below). This will be our very last night at The Castle Inn, High Street, Combe Martin, and we hope that as many people as possible will join us to say goodbye to our home for the last two years. Allan has been very generous to us, with a not inconsiderable subsidy which has generally covered all our advertising expenses. However, as many of you will know, the acoustics of the room have been a problem, amongst other things, and we felt that it was time to make a move if we could find a venue. |

| Young Artists Showcase: Ben & Alfie Weedon - Great Hall, Dartington - 3pm Taunton based brothers. Despite a complete absence of string players in the family, at the tender age of four Ben declared, “But what I really want is a violin!” Alfie’s reaction to spying his first mini-bass was “That’s what I want!” Since then the brothers have built up a repertoire of original work that touches on ‘folk’, ‘world’, ‘classical’ and ‘jazz’ genres but defies categorisation. Spend an afternoon with the brothers to experience how their sibling understanding and natural creativity forms a kind of musical alchemy. You will be captured by their magic. Tickets: Adults £2.50. Young People & Students FREE. Visit website> |

| CONCERT - Shammick Acoustic Sessions> - Pete Harris and Hugh Budden - at Shammick Acoustic’s new home at the Pack o’ Cards, High Street, Combe Martin, EX34 0ET you can’t miss it, as it’s a most unusual and historic building. The club room is the skittle alley, where Chris and Debbie have put themselves out to make it work well for us; great acoustics, so no need for PA; away from the main bar area, so no noise ‘pollution’; great food, if you want to eat before the concert; there’s plenty of room to park, good beer all in all, we think it will make an excellent new home.
Pete Harris and Hugh Budden are from the deep south of England, that is. Pete has been a guest at the club before in another guise, as accompanist to Mick Ryan. His other persona is a blues guitarist, having gigged extensively in the UK and Europe, performed on stage with many American blues artists and appeared on TV and radio. His partner in crime on this occasion is Hugh Budden, whose versatility and sheer brilliance on harmonica has given him a reputation as one of the best. His career has spanned the spectrums of both music and continents, and he has developed a highly individual style of playing. Both have the benefit of strong voices, and present a wide range of blues styles, from Chicago to R&B. Together, they will give us a fantastic blues night not to be missed! The concert starts at 8 p.m., although late-comers are not turned away, and tickets can be bought at the door for £6, or cheaper in advance at £5 from the Pack o’ Cards or Pet’s Pantry in Combe Martin, or online through website> |
