Here, Grimspound Border will dance and the Bishopsteignton Compost Players will perform their Mummers Play. There will then follow a session for all interested musicians and singers. Cider is poured on the roots and shots fired through the branches to ward off evil spirits. Cider is placed in the branches 'for the robin'. Wassailing songs are sung. Wassail is from the Anglo-Saxon wes hal, to be in good health...' Enjoy a walk up to Dartmouth's community orchard for the ancient Wassail ritual to bless the apple trees and then come back to the Flavel to enjoy colourful story telling from the fabulous Stone Soup Storytellers. | Friday 29 February to Saturday 1 March 2008 | PIPING HOT BAGPIPE WEEKEND The Eelgrinders >, Ceri Rhys Matthews (Fernhill), David Faulkner and Stephen Tyler Open Music Session On Friday 29th February 2008, there will be an informal music-making session hosted by David Faulkner at the Plymouth Inn, 26 West Street, Okehampton, Devon EX20 1HH, from 8.00pm. The session will be open to all instruments, and bagpipes will be particularly welcome. Entry is free, and there will be a collection for Devon's folk arts education charity Wren Music. Music Workshops During the morning, between 10.00am - 1pm, Ceri Rhys Matthews and David Faulkner will lead workshops for bagpipers. These will include classes for players at intermediate and advanced levels, as well as classes for beginners, and will cover pipes in D and G. All instruments (not just pipes) are welcome at the two afternoon repertoire development workshops, from 2.00 - 4.00pm. Ceri will teach tunes from the Welsh and Breton traditions, and David Faulkner will teach tunes from both English and Border repertoires. For Hurdy Gurdy players, Stephen Tyler will be running workshops for all levels during the morning and afternoon. Fees for the workshops are £30 full / £20 concessions for both morning and afternoon, and £15 full / £10 concessions for the morning or afternoon only. Advance booking is recommended, as workshop places are limited to ensure all participants receive personal attention. All of the workshops will be held in Okehampton Eel Grinders Ceilidh/Fest Noz On Saturday 1st March 2008 8pm-11.30pm A rare opportunity to dance to The Eelgrinders >. Strong tunes, interweaving harmonies and lots of rhythm to get you up and dancing. The evening will feature music from English, French, Breton, and other European traditions. There will be sets from Ceri Rhys Matthews (Fernhill), and Hurdy Gurdy music from Stephen Tyler. The dances will be called by David Faulkner who has many years experience of calling throughout the Westcountry and beyond. Tickets are available in advance, or on the door at £8 full price, £5 concessions. Early apprenticeship in various bands saw a later swing to folkier climes, but still something of an edge to her lyrics. Her first album 'Honeysuckle' was produced by John Wood and Clive Gregson and saw Kirsty in the nominations for the Horizon Award (best newcomer) at the BBC2 Folk Awards. Kirsty is currently at work on her second album which is to be produced by Boo Hewerdine. She is joined by talented composer and multi instrumentalist Mat Martin.
